Sorry America, you don’t deserve a birthday party this year…

It’s a difficult time in the U.S. right now. Like, really difficult. And with the 4th of July coming up on Friday, I’m just not feeling it.

Seriously, how can we pop a bottle of rosé and watch the fireworks when more and more of our rights are being stripped away? But for real, God forbid we let grandma keep her Medicaid...

Anyway, instead of the usual 4th of July festivities, we’ve decided to head out of the country. I’m going to spend my dollars supporting Mexico’s economy instead. We're choosing tacos over turmoil and peace over performative patriotism. Seriously, a little beach, a little rest, and a break is just what I need.

If you, like me, are also not feeling particularly patriotic this Independence Day, here are a few ideas for how to spend your day off in a way that honors how you really feel:

1. Rest without guilt

You don’t have to earn stillness. Opt out of the BBQs, turn off the news cycle, and use the day to unplug and recharge. Lay on the couch. Read something soft. Stay in your pajamas. Rest is resistance, too.

2. Attend a protest

Hundreds of cities across the country are hosting “Free America” rallies this week. Whether it’s reproductive rights, voting access, LGBTQ+ protections, or immigrant justice, your voice and presence matter. If marching isn't your thing, amplify online, share resources, or volunteer locally. There’s no one right way to show up.

3. Donate to a good cause

If you're feeling helpless, giving is a powerful way to take action. Organizations like the ACLU are doing the work to defend civil liberties, protect immigrant rights, and fight systemic injustice. Even a small donation goes a long way when multiplied by collective effort.

Other orgs to consider:

However you spend the 4th, just know this:You’re allowed to feel disillusioned. You’re allowed to be angry, tired, sad, and everything in between. But you’re also allowed to rest, recharge, and protect your peace. There’s nothing unpatriotic about wanting better. Not just for yourself, but for all of us.

We’re not obligated to celebrate a version of “freedom” that only applies to a select few. So take the day, take the space, and take care of you.
